Our goal at the Doak Walker Care Center is "To create and nurture a community that enhances the lives of those who live and work together."
The Center offers long-term care and short-term rehabilitation stays in a cheerful environment where friendship knows no age limits. It is conveniently connected to Yampa Valley Medical Center, where residents have immediate access to diagnostic tests and medical care. The Center accepts all standard forms of payment, including private pay, private insurance, Medicaid and Medicare.
Fully certified and licensed for 59 residents, the Center meets all government standards required by the Colorado Department of Health for skilled health care. It has been honored by the state numerous times for its innovative elder-centered activities program. Doak Walker Care Center’s neighbor is the GrandKids Child Care Center, Colorado’s first child care center to be located inside a nursing home. Since 1981, residents have benefited from the Generations Growing Together program thanks to this friendly and vibrant multi-generational environment.
In 2005 our center was awarded national recognition as an "Eden Alternative Home." Based on a culture that promotes elder preferences and a home environment, the Eden process is a journey that focuses on life and living.
Many of our residents are elders of Northwest Colorado. Others are community newcomers who have moved to Steamboat Springs to be close to an adult child or other relative.
The non-profit Doak Walker Care Center is the only skilled nursing facility in Routt County.
